Vedic Astrology - The Science Of Light

The understanding of Vedic Astrology is quite different from how we understand astrology in the West. Vedic Astrology is considered the holistic knowledge of the universe, and its existence. Its origin can be traced back to 6000 years. The four Vedas, Yajur Veda, Rig Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda - the Scriptures of ancient India - are full of information on philosophy, spirituality, religion, art and science. The Vedas provide a complete way of life. They are full of knowledge on all facets of life. Vedic Astrology is also called Jyotish or the Science of Light. It found first mention in Rig Veda.

Vedic Astrology goes a long way in helping to resolve the problems of life. Karma, as we know, is the reward or punishment for our actions. Vedic Astrology rests on one of these fundamentals, and the Vedas consider it very important. Our Karma is collection of all that has happened to us in our lives. This takes into account both our past as well as present lives. A horoscope based on the Indian (Vedic) system of Astrology reveals the past (which is unchangeable), and what is coming in the future. Astrologers who follow the Vedic tradition of astrology consider the horoscope to be a draft of our problems, our talents, and attachments, in addition to our tendencies. It also tells us how good Karma can be accumulated.

How Vedic Astrology Came About

The knowledge behind Vedic Astrology came about 6000 years ago. Despite beliefs by other schools of thought, Vedic Astrology predates the Western system of astrology by a long shot. The written proofs left behind by the Vedic astronomers display that the rising and setting of the planets and the stars were due to the movement of the earth. Whereas, until the medieval times, Europe still believed that the Earth was flat and stationary! The sages in those ancient pre-Vedic times and later in the Vedic times, during the state of super-consciousness, had intuitive visions that made them understand things beyond what we know today. In their wisdom, they recognized that the Sun and the various planets influence everything on Earth, including humans, at every level. Their vision allowed them to recognize life beyond past, present, and future.

All this knowledge and pearls of wisdom collected by these visionaries and sages were codified into laws, and this is the basis of the practice of Vedic Astrology. Paravidya (Supreme Knowledge), Aparavidya (Knowledge of Relative Truths) and their quest is what Vedic Astrology is all about.

Vedic And Western Astrologies

The Vedic Astrology is Sidereal. According to it, the Zodiac is associated with 27 constellations. The Western Astrology on the other hand is Tropical - the sky being divided into twelve equal parts. The charts, too, look quite different - circular in the Western system, and square in the Vedic one. In each system, the astrologers calculate the horoscopes differently, since the planets in both the charts are associated with different group of stars. This does not mean that one of them is wrong. The sun sign though may vary in the two systems. While in one system it may be Capricorn, it may be Sagittarius in another!

Is Astrology a True Science? Part I

Learning your horoscope can have a tendency to freeze or weaken your willpower and paralyze you with its inaccurate messages. Karma rules the brainless stars and your fate. We are not made in the image of astrology; we are made in the image of God.

Is astrology a true science? Yes it is, but there are few scientists who understand it. You have to be a pretty highly advanced being to be able to tell the karma of a person and his future. And you can make tremendous karma when you influence a person to believe things that you believe to be true, for if you are an astrologer, for every mistake you have made in your astrological chart you are going to take that karma of the individual.

This subject is much too vast to be grasped philosophically and mathematically except by wise men with profound understanding. When ignoramuses misinterpret the stars and see a scribble in place of a script, that can be predictable in such an imperfect world.

This is not a simple business, so if you consider yourself to be an astrologer, start considering what you are saying as one astrologer told a friend, "you will be dead in ten years." Can you imagine a mistake like that? If you tell people that all kinds of terrible things are going to happen to them, it will happen because none of us are positive enough or fearless enough to reject negative ideas or suggestions. We are afraid of the unknown and when someone begins talking about the unknown cautioning us, we are afraid.

You must understand that our whole galaxy or present universe is moving at incredible speeds. Therefore, how are you going to find out the exact planetary conjunctions of a child at birth? Only a master can through his intuition. You see if you are off more than a few seconds you can not have an absolute exact condition. Masters use their intuition and wisdom to recapture the moment. The true master does not depend upon the testimony of clocks and calendars; for him there is a deeper astrology. Not with one-dimensional sensory eyes, but like a bolt of light on a photosensitive film, the master shoots an intuitive photograph of the persons soul and is able to intuitively film his whole life. The physical form is seen by the human eye but the third eye penetrates even more profoundly down to the universal pattern where all men have an individual and integral part wherein the birthday and hour are not necessary for an astrological analysis.

Here is a deeper explanation of the above. The true spiritual masters bypass the unresolved messages of the stars and go directly to the guidance of the Divine Intelligence that rules the set of laws that controls the heavens, the stars and all human actions and their lives.

With today's science a doctor may predict by careful examination whether a small child will grow up to be vigorous and healthy or will grow to be vulnerable to disease by the age of thirty and so by their inner Christ-like vision, masters can determine the precise consequences from the results already carried out by actions performed by men through many of their past lives.

Certain circumstances are conditional and by the power of yoga concentration and free will it is possible to change karmic outcomes subjected to the strong influences of the stars. The Christ-like master has the power to scan the inner nature of the individual through his omniscient knowledge and give the individual a chance to change his malicious karmic pattern and avoid the predictable outcome thus outwitting the stars that were charted at his birth.

Now our greatest minds of the day can still not understand what the masters are telling us, when is a human being a human being. At one second the moment the spermatozoon fuses with the ovum of the mother there is a huge flash of light in the astral world and the soul goes into that vehicle of light and enters at the base of the spine into the body of the mother. And it is only because the soul is there that the body can develop. It is the intelligence of the soul that develops the body. If only people would listen to the masters and remove their pride there would be less confusion.

Spiritualizing astrology is a very complex subject. If your body is very strong and your mind is powerful, and certain destructive vibrations radiate from the stars due to past karmic blueprints in your subconscious mind, and they begin to shed their rays upon you, there will be no reaction at all because you will be impervious to their rays, your shield is strong. How do you develop this shield? Suppose your body and mind are weak at that particular moment and your biorhythms are low and your immunity is weak due to certain transgressions such as wrong eating, lack of exercise and sexual abuse. What will happen? The cosmic rays will have great power to affect you.

There are certain outward protections, such as astrological bangles that have a specific weight, consisting of three metals combined in a pure form of silver, gold and copper. Certain sizes of diamonds can also be effective. Unfortunately, if you are not spiritually strong the radiation will start affecting you in a destructive way when using large stones as a shield. If you are spiritual, you will absorb the radiation and the magnetic shield will protect you. If you want proof see chapter 16, "Outwitting the Stars" in the book "Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramahansa Yogananda, a spiritual classic, which explains this in detail.

An airplane or a house can be fitted with a lightning rod to attract the stun of the lightning and be protected. Just the same way a human temple can be protected from ceaseless magnetic and electrical radiations emanating from the heavens. It was discovered by the sages that when metals are pure in form they transmit an astral light which is a powerful counter measure against the negative pull of the stars and planets.

When the planets decide to take an unfriendly interest in you, worry not as you can protect yourself with an astrological armlet. The whole idea is that if you do not protect yourself constantly when you are healthy those karmic laws begin to come to collect bills. Children should learn these laws to be able to take care of themselves. You must reprogram the computer of your subconscious mind with strong positive affirmations.

Astrology is a scientific study of the astronomical influences which comes at certain periods of your life according to the planetary conjunctions of certain planets and time specific magnetic fields, attraction and repulsion. And you are born at the very specific time where specific conjunctions are there and which guide your entire life if you do not control your destiny by willpower.

How can you control your destiny? Take Nostradamus, who with great accuracy could see four hundred years into the future happenings of the world. He predicted the colossal drought which is happening in parts of the world today and all the starvation in Africa. You see, the future is already made, the movie is finished. It is all there on the big screen of this cosmic drama. But you can change your destiny. Fate means that you make absolutely no effort to stop all kinds of things from happening to you. You let yourself sink into the misery of the experiences of life because the moment you suffer physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, you start fighting like a wild animal; then you begin to remember who you are. The soul does not evolve, it must be reawakened. The quicker you learn how to control your destiny the less suffering you will have.

When looking within your inner mirror through meditation you attain intuition. Then it will not be necessary to depend upon the limited knowledge of predictive sciences like astrology. You will then have your decoding machine through which you will be able to see the future not from astrological, palm readings or the tarot. You are going to see directly everything concerning you what is coming in the future and therefore you can begin to change. The calm neutralized mind sees all events of the future that appears vividly.

All the prophecies of the happenings on earth as well as human earthy affairs are not necessarily predestined. Previous events that have taken place in a earlier time period have left vibratory images in the ether. There are some who posses a slight amount of psychic ability or power who have a sensitivity and may occasionally tune in and see visual images or mental visions but not as a science or art that can be reliably practiced. Likewise, according to the heavenly ordinance of karmic law of cause and effect vibratory potentials are thrust into the ether of future events and have a likely consequence of causes or effects that were previously initiated. However causes that were originated from human actions and forming as future events are not necessarily inevitable, they change and can evolve drastically according to the actions of man's free choice by transmuting energy and integrating into those cause and effect vibrations. Those who have the ability to link the future and past according to existing conditions can predict a certain outcome. Alter those conditions and the result may cancel out the prediction. By misreading the heavenly scriptural signs and duped by their mind's eye they find themselves embarrassed as doomsday prophets. Very rare and in tune with the divine will, only a real prophet can make accurate and true predictions. When the prophets make known some fortuitous divine plan, years ahead at times, it is a definitive testimony.

Once in a while, veiled in complete mystery definite prophecies are hidden in complex languages and are offered to mankind to reawaken faith and hope of the subtle presence of the hand of God in creation. The same as the movie-director plans out the various scenes in his filming to be projected at the correct and proper time likewise God with His angelic helpers arrange the moment in time for the projection and manifestation of certain magnificent events in the universe. As there is a proper time for all things, the universe runs like a clock mathematically adjusted by the fingers of God and His angelical assistants. When the minds of mundane people are encircled with the inky-mist of ignorance, God sends his prophets and saviors at certain periods in time to redeem the souls that are sunken in darkness. Even the unbelievers are convinced when enlightened seers make prophecies of fourth coming events.

Let me tell you the essence of this article. There are several ways of divining the future with variable dependability. You may foretell a persons future by astrology, by observing his character, the tarot, palm readings, or by retracing his past lives, however doing this would require the power of omniscience used mostly by prophets in telling future events. Individuals with ordinary insight may only partly foretell the actions of a person by using the inferential and observational abilities of the intellect. But by using this method there are many inherent defects for if there is the slightest error in discerning the individuals motives or behavior the conclusion could be completely wrong.

This is the reason astrological analysis when practiced by astrologers with unawakened intuition is inexact. The predictive science of astrology when derived through the all-knowing attunement of God's divine consciousness becomes eternally true. Therefore these illuminated seers can perceive directly the mathematical effects from a person's past-life actions and the accompanying details of forthcoming events.

There are vibratory pictures of distant or future events that are now passing through the ether. The vibratory thought patterns of an event that is to occur in the upcoming future is there in the ether now according to the laws and action of cause and effect. You can develop the power of protecting your family from future accidents which are waiting for you according to cosmic laws as the solar system moves, we are moving in to space time continuum where everything is waiting for you as the solar system moves into the news of tomorrow, next week, next month and next year. Everything is already written about your ego, but you are not the ego, you are not made in the image of the stars. Therefore in the degree you change your status as a spiritual being you can change the future; that is, you can change what is going to happen to you. When the future is there waiting for you, you won't be there.

How can you start right now protecting yourself from future accidents? Here is the key. When you get into your car say these words, "my Lord I have not forgotten you." Just one word of God may save your life, remember that. Just by saying these words you may be saved from a fatal car accident waiting to happen to you.

As long as you question whether or not you will win or lose your battles in life, you will keep on losing. Don't stand still and don't go backward. Most people are engaged in a tug of war or are stationary. Your will power will determine what you are going to do, not your karma, not your horoscope, not your bad habits.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Super Science of Astrology - Where Do They Match?

Frontiers of Information Technology& Super Science of Astrology-Where do they match? We all know how much IT (Information Technology) has helped in doing calculations for astrology in a few seconds as compared to hours taken in the past. This it has lead to spread of astrology- at least the calculations are there without much effort! Now have you wondered how astrology could still be a science - despite some one looking at the chart based on lagna, or looking on your chart based on moon sign or even sun sign?

This is the very reason "scientists" declare it as a fraud and a pseudo science. Which it is NOT. It is based on chance/probability estimate of an event to happen- like would marriage happen in 2009, what is the chance of the same? Is it 30%, 60% to more- there is no YES/NO answer as we generally give in sciences.

But we do the same in quantum physics; in market prediction/economics software- we talk in terms of probabilities and chance-don't we? The why is it that astrology is an outcaste? Let us analyze this based on two case studies.

A) Judgment from various Ascendants- How correct is it?: How can it be true that astrologers prefer lagna fro predictions, and some prefer moon sign for predictions and some Navamsa-but still mostly astrology could be treated in the purview of science. One of the simple ways to resolve this enigma is- that to give weight age to each way of looking at the chart: Lagna = 50%, Moon = 30%, Navamsa = x% Etc. So even if an astrologer sees marital conflict due to difference in opinion (Saturn being there) based on Lagna only- still he is fairly safe if Moon sign chart/rasi chart give neutral indications. So essentially what an astrologer is doing is assigning different weights to different charts and then drawing a judgment. This is very much done in sciences as well- the most of the intelligent systems take into account for this, so we can see how modern IT does connect to astrology. Fuzziness means- one cannot say that YES or NO, where YES=1 and NO= 0 . You could have in-between value like 0.4. So if lagan says fights on the marital front, but rasi says no- one could say the chance of fights is 50%. That is most of the time you are friendly but there could be occasions of intense fights. The intensity time frame would be predicted based on dasha or transits.

B) Concept of Good and Bad Astrologer? Have you ever wondered why there is a concept of good, bad or better astrologer? Let us explore the same? Let us analyze the above kundli, where mars maha dasha is ON, active, and let us see how astrologers of different insights might view it.

Case 1= Average Astrologer: Now an average astrologer would say - Your Mars is averagely placed in Virgo and mars being a natural malefic/bad planet, so fights in general could be there, as it is in 2nd house so problems in profession(2nd house has an indirect bearing on profession).

Case 2 = Medium astrologer If and astrologer goes deeper, say a better astrologer, he would further add value and say Rahu is in rashi of mars, hence it would give its energy as well: So the reading could get modified to , fights would be there and would be of sudden nature(due to rahu),problems in profession- much more problems in profession and obstacles- that would be of a sudden nature(Rahu effects taken up)

Case 3: Better astrologer: Now a still better astrologer would say, that since Rahu gets energy from Saturn in 7th house(3rd full aspect), so expect fights, resulting in coldness, general problems/coldness in profession- much more problems/delay in profession and obstacles and that also suddenly( so this way we have incorporated the effects of Saturn as well). One could go on adding more and more value to the readings depending on the astrologer's knowledge/skill base. In any of the above cases- is any astrologer lying or not telling the truth? No not really- all are fine and could be accommodated, with conclusions given below.

C) Conclusion: So we notice as we add more and more information/knowledge is added to the prediction the better the predictions become. Also you can see that none of the above astrologer case 1 to case 3 is WRONG. But the some one is relatively better than others. Just like an economist is better than other- no one can accurately predict the markets. Also at the same time - we can conclude the more right knowledge an astrologer has better the prediction. So in astrology one cannot make YES or NO assertion, one can only predict the chances, which matches with the law of karma.

So frontier of IT- the fuzzy systems/quantum computing. Also there is No YES or NO, they are some where in-between say yes= 1.0 and No = 0, but any fuzzy system9Like economy, astrology, sociology) could be 0.5 or 0.75 etc.

As we discussed Astrology is much more complex than economic systems looking at it prime facie with very complex and non linear elements in it. So it needs much higher methods like IT to solve the mystery, than saying it is defunct or makes not "scientific sense". So may be a doctors may say after examining a patient tone type of medicine, but when systems very complex like astrology are concerned - there is bound to be subjectivity.

So may be on astrologer would try to strengthen the lord of marriage the other world try to do something different. Also the judgment of the house of marriage would vary some what depending on astrologer's experience (compare it closely with economic systems) So does subjectivity mean it is unscientific? NO.

Good Luck and don't be afraid of any pseudo scientist telling you...

Indian Astrology - A Science Or Something Beyond?

The history of Indian Astrology can be traced back to the origin of Vedas and Puranas and what lies beyond that has now been lost in antiquity. Modern scholars, however, look down upon Pauranic wealth of knowledge as mere imagination or guesswork.

Puranas contain invaluable information on a host of subjects like history, astrology, ayurveda, politics, religion and spirituality. Usually, scholars adhering to Pauranic knowledge systems have been severely restricted in their explorations due to their command on one or two subjects at the most. In fact, only a scholar with complete command on each of the classical knowledge systems can be considered eligible to study, explore and apply the science of Indian astrology effectively.

Puranas calculated time with the help of divisions like shaka and samvat. Based on the calculations of such time divisions numerous calendars and panchangas have also been developed which goes to show that history of the post-Mahabharata era can be recorded in a systematic chronological order without any ambiguities.

The ancient texts of Jyotish also give descriptions of Brahmanda (universe) : -

Kotighna naravnand shatk narav bhubhrid bhubhujangendubhih

Jyotih shastra vido vadanti nabhasah kaksha mimam yojanaih

(Siddhanta Shiromani)

This excerpt can be translated thus: -

The rays of the Sun reach a maximum distance of 187120692000000000 Yojanas( a classical measuring unit) which is known as diameter of the circumference of Brahmanda paridhi (universe) or Akash Kaksha.

Within this circumference of Brahmanda primary prakash pindas (illumined celestial bodies) are situated in their heavenly orbits.

Earth has been described in Siddhanta Shiromani thus: -

Akrishya shaktishcha mahi tayaayat swasthe gurum swami mukham swaktayaa

Akrishyate yatyat teev bhati same samantat ripat twiyamrave

The excerpt can be translated thus: -

Earth is endowed with the power of gravitational force which helps in attracting any object moving in an upward direction.

According to the ancient texts of Jyotish it would be wrong to calculate the beginning of the day from midnight because in the calculation of horoscopes if the moment of birth is even a second before sunrise the day and panchanga calculations of the previous day are taken into consideration. For calculation of Ishtkala as well, the moment of sunrise is of prime import.

Dinam Dineshasya yatoava darshane, tami tamo hanturdarshane sati

(Excerpt taken from Siddhanta Shiromani)

This excerpt can be translated thus: -

The presence and absence of Sun in the skies is considered as day and night respectively.

Another important point to be noted is that, contrary to popular perception, Jyotish cannot be equated with the term of astrology which is defined as the study of planetary movements in its relation to human affairs because Jyotish is an incomparably expansive field which comprises of not only astronomy and astrology but several other related branches of study as well.

This has been made amply clear with the help of three principal divisions of Jyotish namely, Siddhanta which deals with laws of planetary motion and their calculations, Samhita dealing with the correlation of celestial phenomena with terrestrial phenomena on macro as well as microcosmic plane and Hora dealing with personal astrology encompassing muhurta, jataka, prasna, varshphal and other branches of study.

This magnanimous science of Jyotish has its origin as one of the six Vedangas which include Nirukta, Nighantu, Vyakarana, Shiksha, Kalpa, Chand and Jyotish. It is considered that a complete command of each of the six vedangas is required before one can become eligible to begin with the study of Vedas themselves.

In the development of the tree of astrological knowledge Jyotish Shastra consists of the trunk or central portion with its roots originating from the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas and Tantra as they provide complete knowledge of the basic elements of the science of astrology. There is a great need to enhance this classical knowledge resource by taking ahead the tradition of research developed by Rishis and Munis of yore who made astounding observations on the nature of universe thousands of years ago.

The branches of this tree of astrological knowledge can be classified as Siddhanta, Samhita and Hora which provide information on different branches of Indian astrology. The leaves on the branch of Siddhanta Jyotish can be classified as various branches of mathematical calculations including algebra, geometry, trigonometry and spherical astronomy. In Samhita, the leaves can be classified as various studies including study of various omens like falling of lizard, dream interpretations, natural disasters, Samudrika Shastra (study of the natural formation and markings on body parts including palmistry), various positive and negative results of planetary movements and Vastu Shastra (the science of directions). In Hora, the leaves can be classified as various branches of astrology including individual horoscopy, horary astrology, Muhurtas (electional astrology), Tajik study (annual horoscopy or varshphala) and the study of calculation of panchangas.

The fruit of this tree of astrological knowledge can be defined as predictive astrology which provides information on everyone's past, present and future. Nowadays, with rapid advancement of technology in modern times, astrologers have become dependent on computers for their calculations and predictions instead of which they should rely on this tree of astrological knowledge.

The knowledge of our Rishis and Munis in the science of Indian astrology from this statement: -

Our Rishis made a detailed investigation of the nature of planets and celestial bodies and it has been stated about eclipses that: -

Whenever Sun, Moon and earth form a linear alignment due to their heavenly motion it causes eclipses. A solar eclipse is caused when Rahu or Ketu come at a distance of 14 degrees or less from the Sun only in the day falling in the cusp of Pratipada and Amavasya tithis. On the other hand, lunar eclipse takes place only in the night falling in the cusp of Purnima and Pratipada tithis. Each eclipse repeats itself in the same position after 6585 days and 8 hours or 18 years 10 days and 8 hours. In this duration of 18 years 10 days and 8 hours a total of 71 eclipses occur comprising of 42 solar and 29 lunar eclipses. There are a total of 28 total solar eclipses out of these but it is visible at the same place after long periods of time.

The science of Indian astrology is based on such accurate scientific observations that if fully explored it has greater possibilities than even that of a complete scientific discipline. With such incredible potential, the other end of the science of Indian astrology would always elude serious researcher in his explorations because as a branch of knowledge it is not constricted by any preconceived notions of modern science.

Is Astrology a Science?

Which astrological sign is yours. We all know our zodiac sign, many of us check the horoscope page in the newspaper each morning before we go off to work. A large majority of us believe that the position of the planets when we were born controls our personality and also determines the events which occur throughout our lives. It is more than likely that you have met someone who does believe. Whether you are serious about astrology or not, it is often used as an ice breaker in conversation, it is a good way to get to know someone. However, is astrology just mumbo jumbo or does it really have a controlling influence on our lives, is it an actual science?

One of the earliest forms of science known to man is Astrology. Records of astrology have been found which originate in Babylon, these have been found to date from 1645 BC. Early Egyptians and early Greeks produced a timekeeping system and also used a calendar just like the ones we use today. When early man started to observe and understand the world around him, he also began to realize that there was a relationship between his life and the earth, stars and planets. It is possible that astrology may have helped some of the earliest civilizations to understand who they were and where they came from. They most certainly perceived astrology and the world around them as something which was greater than they themselves were, and something which should be studied and understood.

Astrology in modern times is not seen as being a very credible science. At one time astrology was one of the most credible sciences, just as astrophysics or chemistry are today. Early astronomers such as Galileo and Copernicus were known to be practicing astrologers. The astronomer Claudius Ptolemy of whom very little is known, was seen as a leading intellectual of his day, Ptolemy's study and approval of astrology made astrology a hugely respected subject within academic circles. By giving astrology credibility as a science and also as an art, he ensured its practice would not be hindered during the medieval period. It was at this time that many other studies and occult practices were persecuted on religious grounds. He was deemed to be an authority on astrology and established the Tetrabiblos, (this is Greek which means four books) this became the definitive reference for all astrological students. Arabic scholars used the Tetrabiblos quite extensively, and they regarded Ptolemy to be the absolute expert on the subject. Later European scholars began to use the Tetrabiblos and translated it back into Latin in the 12th century.

Modern sciences such as the quantitative sciences caused the influence of astrology to diminish, astrology did however have a resurgence during the 1930's when Princess Margaret was born. In the United Kingdom the Sunday Express newspaper printed Princess Margaret's astrological profile, this is how the daily horoscope in the newspapers we all know came about. Anyone who has read their astrological profile would have to admit that there are a number of coincidences. There are those skeptics who will often say that newspaper horoscopes are very general and could apply to just about anyone.

These skeptics will also say that people will only look for what they want to see, and they will ignore what is not true for them. Therefore, according to the skeptics, people delude themselves and believe that the horoscope is accurate. I believe that this skepticism could be eliminated if we were to sit the skeptic down with a competent astrologer and have his or her astrological profile made using the date, time and place of their birth.

The human race claims to be very knowledgeable about the universe, yet we find it very easy to dismiss astrology as being a credible science. Perhaps if we were to put more effort into the study of astrology as a science, we may learn much more about the early civilizations of our world. Shakespeare perhaps understood, when he wrote in Hamlet, *There are more things on heaven and earth Horatio than are dreamt of in your philosophy.*

Astrology : A Science or Superstition?

Human beings have always been curious to know their future. Whenever someone is in difficulty and cannot easily come out of it, he wants to know whether the days of his misery will come to an end at all. And if yes, then when? When one invests a great deal of time, effort or money into some project, it is natural to wonder whether that investment will bear some fruit. There have always been people around who have successfully predicted future events. Their methods have been different - some people can simply look into the future, some use tarot cards, some draw up an astrological chart which we call horoscopes, some read the lines in the palms of people. One cannot deny that future has been accurately predicted many a times and by many a people. Each successful prediction proves that it is indeed possible to correctly predict future.

In the ancient times, astrologers were held to be in great esteem by the people. There was no difference between astronomers and astrologers. In fact, astronomy and Astrology were not considered to be two different subjects. Many will be surprised to know that most of the renowned scientists of the past, including Sir Isaac Newton, were astrologers too. In ancient India Astrology was known as "Jyotish Shastra" which included predictive Astrology as well as what we know as astronomy. Needless to say that the astrologers of that era were all great mathematicians too. An accomplished astrologer was called "Trikal-darshee" : one who could see past, present and future. It would perhaps not be an exaggeration to say that Astrology was considered to be the foremost branch of science.

Slowly over a period of time this subject came into disrepute.

How Astrology lost its exalted status?

It is a fact of life that people emulate successful, popular and respected persons. Seeing the social status enjoyed by astrologers, charlatans started masquerading as astrologers. They learnt a few tricks of the trade and started duping gullible people. It was and still is a very lucrative business. An astrologer earns money by making predictions while giving no guarantee that any of his predictions will turn out to be true. There is no money back guarantee :-). Once an astrologer sets up shop, people start coming to him in the hope that may be he will be able to foresee their future correctly. The astrologer is in a wonderful position. For example, he may make predictions about ten persons, getting only one prediction right. The nine persons, about whom he predicted wrongly, will never come back to him. But the tenth person, about which the astrologer was able to predict correctly, will not only come back to him again but also refer many other persons to him, citing personal experience. In this way, the business of an astrologer always flourishes, no matter how he himself fares in his trade. But the downside of this was that astrologers, as a group, started being seen as a lot of dubious persons like politicians of the modern age. Once such impression started gaining ground, Astrology as a subject no longer remained attractive to intelligent persons. People, who had talent, started to pursue other fields of knowledge. Over a period of time, the inevitable happened. No talent, worth its salt, chose to pursue Astrology as a vocation or a hobby and the outcome of this is for everyone to see in the present times.

There was one more very important reason for Astrology becoming one of the lesser fields of knowledge. It was the decline of India, the fountainhead of human civilization, and its loss of status as the repository of all the knowledge of the ancient world (see How India lost its Glory). The Islamic hordes, who attacked and looted India many a times and later ruled that country for hundred of years, had no respect for priceless works of art, the magnificent architecture and the other exalted areas of human endeavor. They destroyed most of the ancient temples, burnt down libraries like Nalanda and Takshshila and permanently took away innumerable books of infinite wisdom from the future generations of humanity. A great amount of recorded knowledge was lost, astrological books included. This loss proved to be irreparable, as the then Indian society became engaged in ensuring its survival and a constant struggle against the aggressors. The few people, who had some invaluable texts and scriptures with them, were hard put to preserve the remaining works of ancient sages. That is why, when one studies Astrology , he feels as if some vital links are missing. With the Hindu philosophy losing its ground it was natural that Astrology would lose its prominent place too. As the modern science developed and the scientific temperament gained ground, with the dearth of genuine astrologers, Astrology started fading into oblivion.

The criticism and The defense

Astrology is scoffed at by people for two main reasons. First, of course, is that the predictions made by astrologers often goes wrong. Secondly, if one takes his horoscope to different astrologers, they make different predictions. They even make different horoscopes given the same set of data regarding the birth of a person. These facts force people conclude that Astrology is not a science and that it is only a means to befool people for the astrologers' benefit.

One cannot deny that the reasons cited above are valid. Nonetheless, there is some element of prejudice against Astrology which also plays some part in the denigration of this science. Let us take an example to illustrate this point.

A man falls sick due to some disease. He goes to his neighborhood doctor. The doctor advises him to go for some tests. After seeing the results of those tests and considering the patient's symptoms, the doctor concludes that the man has contracted some particular disease say, Sickosis :-). He prescribes some medicines and the patient goes home in the hope of getting rid of the sickness as soon as possible. After taking the medicines for next two days, the patient finds that the medicines are not working the way they were supposed to work. He goes back to the doctor and the doctor changes the medicines and the person starts responding to the second set of medication immediately. Within a few days, the person is back to his old healthy self.

What would have happened if the person had not responded to that second set of medicines? Most probably he would have gone to another doctor. That doctor would have advised him to go for more tests, diagnosed his problem as per his own knowledge and experience and treated him accordingly. Again, there would have been the same probability of the patient getting rid of his disease.

So, in the end it boils down to problem of correct diagnosis. As soon as the disease is identified correctly, it can be treated successfully. The doctor's problem is to identify the disease correctly, given the symptoms and the results of the tests conducted. In fact, he guesses the disease based on the symptoms the patient displays and to confirm his suspicions the doctor asks the patient to undergo a particular set of tests. If the doctor's first guess is proved wrong, he suggests another set of tests to the patient aimed at confirming his second best guess of the disease.

There is one more element which may mar the chances of the patient getting better: the test results. If the lab conducting those tests makes a mistake, the doctor is bound to be misled by the results. It has also been observed many a times that even with the same symptoms and the same set of test results, different doctors may diagnose the problem differently.

The same thing, when happening in the context of Astrology , is proffered as a proof that it is not a science. When a doctor makes a mistake, his skills are blamed not the Medical Science. But if an astrologer fails, it is Astrology which is considered a pseudo-science. If doctors can arrive at different conclusions on the basis of same data, why astrologers should not be allowed to differ with each other. If you take the blood samples of the same patient to different labs, you are almost certain to find differences in their findings. If the machines built with all our scientific knowledge at our disposal make mistakes, no one denigrates modern science itself. But when it comes to Astrology, people are only too ready to dismiss it. Perhaps, by doing this, people want to prove that they have, what is called, scientific temperament.

Why Astrologers go wrong in their prediction?

Lack of knowledge: This is perhaps the foremost reason. Most of the astrologers, after learning a bit, find it difficult to resist the temptation to start making predictions. A certain percentage of their predictions do turn out to be true since they have learnt a little bit of Astrology after all. They cannot hold themselves back from showing off their half baked knowledge. Another reason if the temptation to start reaping, as soon as possible, the fruits of their efforts made in learning the subject. Once the customers start flocking to them, they lose the urge to keep learning further. Also, they are left with little spare time to make further efforts to learn more. They get too busy duping people.

Lack of Talent: In the modern times, since the pursuit of this subject is not considered very respectable, persons of genius do not take up the study of Astrology. They would rather prefer to become scientists, engineers, doctors, littérateurs, artists etc. This does not help the development of Astrology nor does it help add to the knowledge or find the missing links in this subject. Currently, there are no serious research projects related to this field. Thus this base of knowledge does not get updated.

Incorrect Data: As the very basis of Astrology is mathematical, the data such as time of birth etc. must be accurate. If this data is incorrect, the horoscope and consequently the interpretation of it is bound to be faulty. The position of cusps, house divisions, and the planetary positions at any given moment needs to be accurate too. The numerous ephemeris differ from each other so much that it seems incredible. One must follow the most accurate data (for example, from NASA) for calculations, in this age of science. Normally, astrologers tend to take the easy route, that of following some ready-reckoner sort of things, leading to inaccuracies in their calculations.

Destiny of the subject: It may so happen that the fate of the person who wants his future read, does not favor the person in knowing his future. This idea may seem far fetched but it is not. Even in modern times, with all the development of medical science, patients keep dying of fully treatable diseases. If a person is destined to die of pneumonia, he will in spite of the fact that millions of people around the world are successfully treated for it every year. If fate can play a role here why cannot it play the same role regarding Astrology.

The very nature of Future: Modern science divides the universe in two parts: known and the unknown. It is believed that whatever is unknown today, will become known tomorrow. Over a period of time, every thing will become known one day. But the enlightened sages have said that certain aspects of the existence is unknowable. These things do not belong in the domain of human knowledge. Certain aspects of future also belongs to the same domain.

Anyone, who will study Astrology with an open mind, cannot dismiss it as something without merit. It is an easy task for astrologers to correctly tell certain things about a man, such as his physical characteristics, diseases he is likely to get afflicted with, his temperament, his overall success in life in terms of money he earns or fame he achieves, the nature of his profession etc., simply by looking at his correctly drawn horoscope. It is in the matters of details and the timing of events that astrologers tend to go awry. What is needed is a fresh approach to the subject. Brilliant minds should take it up for study, correct some anomalies and misconceptions which this science has acquired over the long past. Then only this subject can regain its rightful place as a serious and important branch of knowledge.
