Methods and Techniques of Medical Astrology

Medical astrology is the branch of astrology that deals with the possible and actual health and diseases of the client. Usually, people come to the astrologer in times of great life changes, such as

Should I change my job?

When will I come into my inheritance?

Should I marry him/her? etc

To the medical astrologer, however, people come in the progressed stages of the illness, often after some kind of surgery has already taken place, along with a rich history of dealing with doctors. The usual questions for the medical astrologer are:

Should I go for surgery?

Does it have to be a surgery?

When should the surgery take place?

Why don't we have children?

Do I have cancer?

Will my cancer come to pass this year? etc

If the events in the history of illness coincide with certain astrological transits and configurations, we can find the astrological reason for illness, give the prognosis for the course and duration of the illness, and decide upon a therapy needed and so on. The opposite situation often takes place as well: the client comes for the usual astrological session, but the astrologer sees in the horoscope a danger long before the illness has manifested and materialized.

A great deal of expectations is attached to the advice the medical astrologer gives. Will there be a surgery or not, to go for chemotherapy or not, for a radiology therapy or not...

"On Tuesday, I have a radiology therapy appointment, should I go?"

"The doctor recommended taking my bladder away to stop the cancer from spreading, should I do that or not?"

Medical astrology is the cruelest branch of astrology. If you cannot bear meeting with tough, terminal pathologies, if you do not want to take lethal responsibility for the consequences of you advice -- you better don't do it. If you are not a medical doctor by profession, you will have to prepare well and read literature, consult medical doctors, gather information from the Internet, take part in forums, groups, membership sites etc.

The problems of curing are drastically different to what astrologers usually do during the reading. In an ideal world, astrologers advise and clients change their behavior, in order to spend the surplus energy the planets and stars send them. Medical astrologer may be more concrete and suggest wearing certain crystals, colours, aromatherapy, flower remedies and so on. It is best that the professions of medical astrologer and medical doctor do not mix. Ideally, medical astrologer does not cure and the client is not the patient, unless the medical astrologer is medical doctor as well, or eventually, a qualified homeopath. Neither should medical astrologer be a healer: he or she should only give a highly qualified prognosis of malefic influences that have already manifested as a disease and will -- unless nothing is undertaken -- continue to manifest thus, probably with heavier consequences as the time progresses.

Medical astrologer reaches out for all astrological techniques and methods from which something can be deduced about the nature of illness. He or she must be, above all, a competent astrologer, must command a wide array of astrological techniques and use them for the benefit of the client and their health. Since he or she gives advice about healing, but cannot heal on his own, in an ideal world, he or she should be connected to doctors and healers, should know their natal charts and through synastry decide whom the patient should see next. However, for practical reasons, it is best that the client finds his or her own doctors and healers to go after visiting the astrologer, otherwise, in case something goes wrong (and with ill people it always will), the astrologer can be accused of having a deal with the health practitioner that he has sent the client to.

From the chart, it is possible to decide upon the kind of therapy, such as homeopathy, Bach flower remedies, vibropathy, massage, classical medicine, attending spas, aromatherapy, crystal healing, Su Jok, etc.

The Signs

Signs represent the twelve large systems in the body of man, starting with Aries which represents the head, all through the sign of Pisces, ruling the feet. The signs that contain the planets, either by birth or through progressed horoscopes, will stand out, or will most probably be the sources of illness. For each sign a special tissue salt exists; these are the building materials for human body, the substances through the combination of which tissues, organs, systems of organs, and finally the entire body are built. Using these salts on their own or by combining them in material or homeopathic doses, one's health can be much improved.

Quite similarly, for each sign a special type of food is best. Medical astrologer will be qualified to give advice about food, and this will also improve the client's health in numerous ways. Using the theory of doctrines, i.e. finding the similarities between the zodiac, body, and herbs, it is also possible to connect signs with herbs and prescribe them to help the patient.

Degrees of the Horoscope in Medical Astrology

Each sign has 30 degrees, and each of these 360 degrees is connected to one part of the body. The planet on that degree is a predisposition for an illness -- the degree tells us which part of the body is in question, while the planet will show what kind of disease it will be. In a similar manner, it is possible to connect the midpoints and the degrees.

The Planets, Asteroids, and the Uranian Planets in Medical Astrology

The planets are sources of energy in the horoscope, and each is unique. For instance, the energy of Mars is fire-like; he flames up the fires in the body (resulting in high temperature) and cleanses it thus. Neptune stands for bacteria that are known to the medicine, while Pluto is for the unknown bacteria, and so on. The asteroids, the large ones in particular, such as Ceres, Juno and others, behave in a similar way. In medical astrology, the Uranian planets can also be used. There are eight "Uranian" planets which have no astronomical data, but the influence of which can be felt quite strongly in the chart. Some of these planets have strong medical connotations, so using them can increase the credibility of medical astrology analysis up to 90% of success.

The Houses in Medical Astrology

Out of the twelve houses in the usual astrology, five are more significant that the others:

First house -- the physical body,

Sixth house -- diseases,

Eighth house -- support from others, sex, death, karma, terminal states, cancer,

Twelfth house -- isolation, hospitals and monasteries, psychic problems, auto-immunity.

However, every house has its own special meaning in medical astrology:

No. 1 -- face, consciousness, brain tumors, brain insults, etc

No. 2 -- blood, electrolytes, hormones, food intake, hypophysis, diabetes.

No. 3 -- the lungs, speech problems,

No. 4 -- producing food for others, mother, milk; genetics, inheritance,

No. 5 -- heart, infarction of myocardium,

No. 6 -- diseases, personal hygiene, meals, day to day habits,

No. 7 -- death through brain problems, balance of the body, spine,

No. 8 -- Expelling of the processed foods, hypophysis, adrenal cortex, kidneys,

No. 9 -- the upper part of brain, cerebral hemisphere, Jupiter rules over the left, Neptune rules over the right hemisphere;

No. 10 -- metabolism,

No. 11 -- circulation, hemorrhagia,

No. 12 -- autoimmune diseases, thymus, immunity in general, liver.

The ruler of the house is the main indicator of the events related to the house, while the planets in the house are not so important. For instance, to see what kinds of illnesses one can have, take a look at the sixth house and its ruler, its position, aspects and transits. Only after the ruler remained under pressure for a long time, we could be allowed to start predicting the existence of a disease.

Planetary Aspects

How will a planet express its energies primarily depends on its relations with other planets, which boils down to the angle that those two planets make with the centre of the circle. Each pair of planets brings its own kind of sickness, for instance, a combination of Sun and Saturn will slow down the metabolism, while the Sun and Mars make it easy for the person to burn his or her own energy -- such persons often go in for sports.

The angle of 150 degrees (inconjunction) is especially malefic. Whenever there is an exact inconjunction between two planets in the chart, the person will have to live through various troubles of medical nature. Malefic aspects from malefic planets to the Moon are the worst. Squares are extremely malefic, so Saturn squaring the Moon gives a predisposition towards cancer, although the same effect may be seen from malefic aspects from Neptune and/or Pluto to the Moon. Just as in other branches of astrology, malefic aspects produce action -- an illness of a kind. But, it always pays to see where the good aspects are, because they bring amelioration, often a complete cure -- sometimes through remedies, sometimes through persons that resemble the description of the aspect (for instance, a trine to Neptune -- healing through an apothecary etc.)

If there are no beneficial aspects to the rulers of the 6th, 8th and/or 12th houses, then we should find persons whose planets create harmonious aspects. If that person is the doctor or a healer, healing will be successful.

Midpoints in Medical Astrology

Each planet is on the middle distance of another two planets, as if in a triple conjunction. For every midpoint there is a special medical delineation: the midpoint of Jupiter and Saturn denotes liver, while MA/SA (the midpoint for Mars and Saturn) denotes spasms, in more involved cases even death. Midpoints make each chart as unique as possible and you cannot do medical astrology well if you are not using them. For even greater precision, include the Uranian planets and their midpoints, especially in progressed charts.

Medical Aphorisms

Medical aphorisms are configurations typical for specific diseases and states. For instance, Mars on 29 Scorpio near the Ascendent will give a predisposition towards bronchitis, as will any squared malefic in Gemini, as will Saturn on the Ascendent in a mutable sign... and there may be more such combinations, for any given illness. The medical astrologer must be very well acquainted with such configurations and should be able to recognize them in the chart. However, the clients won't hold it against you if the middle of the session you look up at the manual -- they won't care if it helps them get cured!

In these modern times, it is possible to have astrology software compute medical configurations in the natal chart. To be more precise, without such a piece of software, it would be very difficult to do medical astrology, because there are hundreds of such configurations.

Diagnosing an Illness Based on the Natal Chart

Every chart contains dozens of potentially problematic configurations. It does not mean that that person must be ill just because such configurations exist in the chart, neither will it mean that the person will have all those illnesses at once, neither will it mean that all possibilities for illnesses in the chart must become reality. Configuration is a predisposition for illness, and it will manifest itself only when at least three predispositions are active at the same time. For instance, a square between the Moon and Saturn is the most frequent natal predisposition for cancer. The second predisposition may then come every seven years, since it takes seven years for the progressed Moon to make another malefic aspect to the natal Saturn. The third factor may come into play through a solar chart, in which there may be, say, an in conjunction between the Moon and Saturn. Or the third factor may come through a slow transit of Saturn, perhaps through its stationary point squaring the natal Moon. If there are four such factors at one and the same period of time, the client will feel as if surrounded by evil and wherever they turn to, the situation looks hopeless to them.

Only when we see such a concentration of approximately identical transits, may we want to warn the client about cancer or some other such grave illness. Since we can compute the transits and solar charts in advance, we can exactly tell the client when his or her troubles will begin, as well as when will they end.

Sometimes, an identical predisposition will appear from different configurations. If there is a square of Uranus to the Ascendent, but that same Ascendent is also squared by Pluto, the combination for surgery will appear twice. Now it only takes a transit of Mars to empower one of those configurations, or for Mars to be on the Uranus/Pluto midpoint in the solar return chart and the surgery seems unavoidable.

Diagnosing an Illness Based on Transits, Progressions, Solar and Synastry Charts

In natal astrology, in 90% of sessions we will need nothing more than the natal chart and the transits -- in one-on-one sessions there simply isn't time to dive into all the charts that can be useful. In medical astrology, however, it is a routine to use many other types of charts. There must be three independent confirmations for illness to appear, regardless in which chart do we see it. Looking for clues in the chart in case of medical astrology often is a detective-like work, until you find the constellation which was active when the symptoms first started. Once you connect real-life events with their possible astrological causes, you can predict how the illness will unfold, and with confidence.

Long transits of malefic planets produce all kinds of health problems, while the progressive horoscope produces the best long-term view of the client's life. In medical astrology, we always use solar charts, because there we see strong accents, which may not endure for long, but which sometimes leave the sequel for the rest of the client's life.

It also matters whom do you live with. The persons the client lives with and exchanges his or her energy with them. Sometimes they heal just by being present, in other times they make the client only sicker. The country in which the client lives will also have its own horoscope and that can be taken into account too.

Auxiliary Methods in Medical Astrology

Arabian Parts are formed by adding two important points, from which another, the third point, is subtracted. There are about 500 Arabian Parts, and some of them are directly related to health. Pars Fortunae is the most well known Arabian Part, and it combines influences of the Sun, Moon and Ascendent.

Each particular house has its own set of Arabian Parts. For instance, the sixth house has the following two Arabian Parts, which are of interest in medical astrology:

Incurable diseases, bad fortune and vice (Asc + Mars - Saturn),

Curable diseases (Asc + Mars - Mercur),

The sixth house also contains the parts for servants, the prisoners of war, and the pars of the defeated, which have nothing to do with health.

The number of Arabian Parts per house varies: house No. 7 has 16 Arabian Parts, house No. 8 -- 5 Parts and so on.

Quite often, horary astrology will yield loads of info. Instead of natal charts and the charts that are derived from it, in horary astrology we erect the chart for the time of asking the question about the illness. Reading a horary chart is different to the reading of the natal and all other charts, so don't use this technique unless you know what you are doing. Nevertheless, it pays to learn horary astrology, because it often gives a direct glimpse into the real situation, the course of the illness, eventual surgeries and deaths etc.

The decumbiture chart is the chart for the beginning of an illness. We should make it only if we know for certain when the illness begun. Also has rules of its own.

Electional astrology tries to discover when an action should begin. In medical astrology, such charts could be studied to discover when the prescribed therapy should start, when is the time for doctor to visit the patient and so on.

The Role of Medical Astrology in Healing

Modern medicine knows a lot about the state of the patient in the moment of measurement, and knows also, in a statistical manner, whether the prognosis is good or bad. Nevertheless, it never deals with the future of the patient, and is almost always used when something bad has already happened. Medical astrology is the missing link between the recorded state of the patient, his or her current therapy and the future development of the illness. Since it is possible to make the astrological prognosis in advance, it becomes possible to do something in advance as well. Homeopathy and other energy healing systems are a natural continuation of medical astrology, because energy healing "spends" the unwanted but present energy that planets and stars send us via astral body. The biggest advantage of medical astrology is that it enables not only to predict which techniques and remedies can heal now, but when these techniques and remedies should be stopped, and some other healing modality be taken and applied instead.

How To Be A Professional Astrologer

A professional astrologer has many obstacles on the path to the business of proving professional astrology consultations. There are no companies that hire professional astrologers; this is a business that you will need entrepreneurial skills along with top astrological knowledge.

One does not generally choose to be an astrologer, the profession calls to you. It truly is a calling. A future astrologer is compelled to share the mysteries and messages from the universe to help others with a system that provides so much wisdom and understanding.

Excellent training is essential in paving the path to be a good astrologer. There are several professional organizations that provide conferences that will give you access to the worlds best and famous astrologers. There are professional astrology certification courses offered through national astrology organizations that will measure your level of learning. Kepler college offers a bachelors and a masters degree in astrology.

If you do not have a local astrology club sign up for on line lessons and travel to regional conferences. Once you are introduced to several disciplines of astrology you will want to narrow down your focus to an astrological field that suits your temperament. You may be inclined towards psychological astrology, predictive, financial, horary, cosmobiology, Vedic, to name just a few.

Reading is essential, there are hundreds of books that will help you gain deeper understanding of how to interpret a chart. It is wise to choose authors that practice the type of astrology that you are interested in. Once you have mastered your art then begin with providing astrology chart readings to friends for feedback. Feedback on your skills is essential to honing your book knowledge.

Being a professional astrologer is a rewarding experience; knowing you are helping others understand their destiny and path in life through astrology brings satisfaction. Professional astrology consultations can help others at different times of crises and at normal times to ascertain what the planetary influences are around a person.

If you feel the calling to be a professional astrologer be patient with the process. Getting several personal readings from other astrologers will give you an idea of the different styles of astrological readings and help you know what you need to do to become a good astrologer. Use the messages in your own astrology chart to help you on your path to becoming a professional astrology consultant.

The Evolution of Astrology

Do the planets really affect our moods, personality, and life's course? Many of humanities earliest civilizations seemed to think so. The study of Astrology started during the Upper Paleolithic era with the creation of star charts in France between 16,500 and 13,000 BCE. The most famous of these prehistoric star charts depicted "The Summer Triangle" and the Pleiades constellations. The first Astrologer's early pictographs were symbols of animals like bulls, antelopes, and horses drawn with a series of dots resembling star constellations like Taurus and the Pleiades. There is some debate amongst scientists whether these dots and dashes represent an extensive star map or just a shamanistic spiritual vision common to other groups during this period.

Although early pictographs are interesting, the exact intent of the individuals drawing them is hard to discern. Therefore modern Astrology most likely developed in early Mesopotamia often called "the fertile crescent" which housed the first recognized human societies like the Sumerians.

Like many early observations of the cosmos, observation of the night sky for signs of significant events played a key role in the development of Astrology. The Mesopotamians, however, added a key element to this query into the constellations when they added a system of patterns including planets that might affect human behavior, personality, and societal events. Only when the stars evolved from just being signs from above foretelling events into a system of assigning humans with attributes based on planetary locations did true Astrology, as we know it exist.

The Greeks further expanded the first Astrology of the early Mesopotamians refining it to apply to their religious deities (which were assigned different constellations, planets, etc.). Deifying, personifying, and even worshipping the heavens became a practice at this point. The use of Astrology to foretell an individual's future evolved from the Astrology once reserved to foretell the fate of kings and principalities, in Greece during the sixth century BCE.

Later during the third century BCE because of the conquests of the Macedonian conqueror Alexander "The Great" Alexandria, Egypt became the hub of Astrological knowledge. The final evolution of this Hellenistic astrology prevalent in Alexandria during this period gave rise to modern Western Astrology complete with zodiac, horoscopes, and charts.

Finally, the astrological works of Greek and Egyptian astrologers migrated from its Alexandrian hub, in Egypt, into Europe. At this point Arabic scholars migrating into Europe during the High Middle Ages introduced Horary or Western Astrology to the European Continent. Europeans scholars translated the Arabic astrological texts to Latin during this period to create an "almanac" of star charts. Doctors were required to study this text and abide by certain aspects of it, in their medical practices.

During the Renaissance period, in Europe, which occurred between the 14th and 17th centuries a select few like the Medici family, in Italy, practiced Astrology at first. Interestingly enough the prominent Medici family also used one of the first known set of Tarot cards called the Minchiate Tarot (Also thought to be brought to Europe from Egypt). Over time as astrology became more popular, Astrologers became commonplace. These traditional Astrologers were usually scholars versed in mathematics.

The next period in the history of astrology occurred during the Age of Enlightenment. This period during the 17th and 18th centuries dealt the practice of Astrology a severe blow. With the acceptance of Mikolaj Kopernik's concept of heliocentric cosmology, the world cast aside the Ptolemaic basis for Astrology and Astrology itself. Mikolaj Kopernik's simple explanation of planets in retrograde also posed a problem for Astrology. Moreover, Kepler's scientific defense of Kopernik's work and theories on planetary movement along with Galileo's refractive telescope discovering four of the moons that orbited Jupiter compounded the issue. At this point Astrology and Astronomy where forever separated as science and pseudo-science. Astrology fell out of favor at this point for nearly 200 years.

During the twentieth century, however, a revival in Astrology occurred. Popular horoscopes based on sun sign astrology and the zodiac began appearing, in tabloids. Most people do not take these type of horoscopes as seriously as our ancient ancestors did; however, some still seriously consult the stars to see what fortune awaits them daily.

Are Astrology and Healing of Ailments Interlinked?

We come across many references in the Indian ancient literature regarding relationship between astrology and probable timing of ailments. Prescriptions for treatment of disease were also done with the combined help of astrology and Ayurveda. Many classics proclaim that the expert medicine-men of the past were also expert astrologers.

At that time, the only system of medicine known to man was Ayurveda. There were some other systems akin to Ayurveda outside India also. All systems depended on plant and animal species, stones and other materials for preparation of medicine. The Allopathic and the homeopathic systems developed after a long time and both were aided by laboratory tests and research. The same degree of accuracy cannot be claimed for diagnosis of a disease on the basis of the horoscope of an individual. However, a relationship exists between the timing of a disease and planetary influences which a competent astrologer can find out from a duly-cast horoscope.

The practitioners of Ayurveda in the past took help from astrology in these matters. Vedic astrology is unique as it advocates remedial measures in the form of propitiation of planets also in the event of occurrence of a disease.

Many such matters have been discussed in detail by Dr. K.S. Charak in his book "Essentials of Medical Astrology". Dr. Charak is a practicing surgeon with an F.R.C.S degree from U.K. He claims in his book that the knowledge of astrology becomes very useful for diagnosing and treating ailments and for finding out the probable timing of the occurrence of a disease.

Vedic astrology can help in the following manners.

Probable timing of the disease: An astrologer can time the onset of disease even before the occurrence of the disease by seeing the planetary combinations in the horoscope and by using the "dasa" system and the transit. This is the area of strength for an astrologer which a doctor may not be able to do. An astrologer can also predict about the type of disease and the organs likely to be affected by the disease.

Diagnosis of disease: Astrological classics do point towards combinations which can cause specific illnesses as per the horoscope, but, this can be better done by a doctor. An astrologer can provide valuable inputs at times. However, the area of diagnosis is the strength of the medical practitioner. In this field they seem to score over an astrologer.

Severity of disease: This area can be handled by both astrologers as well as doctors. Astrologers can understand the severity of the disease by judging the degree of affliction of planets causing the ailments and by cross-checking the result with the ongoing "dasa" and prevalent transits.

Treatment: The medical remedies of today are far more superior and reliable compared to astrological remedies. However, astrology can help as a preventive tool. It makes an individual aware about the problems in advance so that he can take preventive steps. He can take steps for diluting the impact of the disease by resorting to methods prescribed by astrological classics. Such methods are sometimes very useful. Surgical operations are also not 100% successful and views of competent astrologers can be taken in such matters. Medical practitioners can be consulted after the onset of the problem.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Super Science of Astrology - Where Do They Match?

Frontiers of Information Technology& Super Science of Astrology-Where do they match? We all know how much IT (Information Technology) has helped in doing calculations for astrology in a few seconds as compared to hours taken in the past. This it has lead to spread of astrology- at least the calculations are there without much effort! Now have you wondered how astrology could still be a science - despite some one looking at the chart based on lagna, or looking on your chart based on moon sign or even sun sign?

This is the very reason "scientists" declare it as a fraud and a pseudo science. Which it is NOT. It is based on chance/probability estimate of an event to happen- like would marriage happen in 2009, what is the chance of the same? Is it 30%, 60% to more- there is no YES/NO answer as we generally give in sciences.

But we do the same in quantum physics; in market prediction/economics software- we talk in terms of probabilities and chance-don't we? The why is it that astrology is an outcaste? Let us analyze this based on two case studies.

A) Judgment from various Ascendants- How correct is it?: How can it be true that astrologers prefer lagna fro predictions, and some prefer moon sign for predictions and some Navamsa-but still mostly astrology could be treated in the purview of science. One of the simple ways to resolve this enigma is- that to give weight age to each way of looking at the chart: Lagna = 50%, Moon = 30%, Navamsa = x% Etc. So even if an astrologer sees marital conflict due to difference in opinion (Saturn being there) based on Lagna only- still he is fairly safe if Moon sign chart/rasi chart give neutral indications. So essentially what an astrologer is doing is assigning different weights to different charts and then drawing a judgment. This is very much done in sciences as well- the most of the intelligent systems take into account for this, so we can see how modern IT does connect to astrology. Fuzziness means- one cannot say that YES or NO, where YES=1 and NO= 0 . You could have in-between value like 0.4. So if lagan says fights on the marital front, but rasi says no- one could say the chance of fights is 50%. That is most of the time you are friendly but there could be occasions of intense fights. The intensity time frame would be predicted based on dasha or transits.

B) Concept of Good and Bad Astrologer? Have you ever wondered why there is a concept of good, bad or better astrologer? Let us explore the same? Let us analyze the above kundli, where mars maha dasha is ON, active, and let us see how astrologers of different insights might view it.

Case 1= Average Astrologer: Now an average astrologer would say - Your Mars is averagely placed in Virgo and mars being a natural malefic/bad planet, so fights in general could be there, as it is in 2nd house so problems in profession(2nd house has an indirect bearing on profession).

Case 2 = Medium astrologer If and astrologer goes deeper, say a better astrologer, he would further add value and say Rahu is in rashi of mars, hence it would give its energy as well: So the reading could get modified to , fights would be there and would be of sudden nature(due to rahu),problems in profession- much more problems in profession and obstacles- that would be of a sudden nature(Rahu effects taken up)

Case 3: Better astrologer: Now a still better astrologer would say, that since Rahu gets energy from Saturn in 7th house(3rd full aspect), so expect fights, resulting in coldness, general problems/coldness in profession- much more problems/delay in profession and obstacles and that also suddenly( so this way we have incorporated the effects of Saturn as well). One could go on adding more and more value to the readings depending on the astrologer's knowledge/skill base. In any of the above cases- is any astrologer lying or not telling the truth? No not really- all are fine and could be accommodated, with conclusions given below.

C) Conclusion: So we notice as we add more and more information/knowledge is added to the prediction the better the predictions become. Also you can see that none of the above astrologer case 1 to case 3 is WRONG. But the some one is relatively better than others. Just like an economist is better than other- no one can accurately predict the markets. Also at the same time - we can conclude the more right knowledge an astrologer has better the prediction. So in astrology one cannot make YES or NO assertion, one can only predict the chances, which matches with the law of karma.

So frontier of IT- the fuzzy systems/quantum computing. Also there is No YES or NO, they are some where in-between say yes= 1.0 and No = 0, but any fuzzy system9Like economy, astrology, sociology) could be 0.5 or 0.75 etc.

As we discussed Astrology is much more complex than economic systems looking at it prime facie with very complex and non linear elements in it. So it needs much higher methods like IT to solve the mystery, than saying it is defunct or makes not "scientific sense". So may be a doctors may say after examining a patient tone type of medicine, but when systems very complex like astrology are concerned - there is bound to be subjectivity.

So may be on astrologer would try to strengthen the lord of marriage the other world try to do something different. Also the judgment of the house of marriage would vary some what depending on astrologer's experience (compare it closely with economic systems) So does subjectivity mean it is unscientific? NO.

Good Luck and don't be afraid of any pseudo scientist telling you...

Let's Get Down to Earth With Mundane Astrology - The Planets

The popularized form of astrology found in newspaper and magazine columns as well as on thousands of online websites can be considered introductory material. Since astrology covers all of human and worldly experience as potential subjects, the actuality of astrology is broader and deeper than sun-sign astrology. To initiate an understanding of astrology there is no better place to begin than with individual human experience, the generalities that are addressed in sun-sign astrology. We can each identify with some part of human experience and can personally identify with certain common traits or experiences.

Once we have a framework for such personal experience we can apply that understanding to a broader scope of world experience. This is what thousands of astrologers do worldwide every day. Astrologers build their skills through personal experience in reading then learn to apply those principles to the broader spectrum of experience.

For example we might move from astrology about a person to astrology about a couple of people in a relationship, or a group in relationship such as a family, a business, or even a rock band. A developing astrologer might focus on a specialty area such as health, business, corporate, or stock market, weather or earth movements, world events, cities, states or countries, politics or even karma to name a few possibilities. Basic astrological principles remain the same but each application requires the development of a new set of descriptions.

My recent personal research project was political stemming from my curiosity about the 2008 election process and the 2009 inauguration of our new president. In order to understand the country itself, I focused on the 13 primary points of the USA sky map as representative of 1) our country as an entity, as well as 2) the citizenry the country represents.

Those 13 points were the 10 bodies, the midheaven, the ascendant and the lunar node. How do you apply regular personal astrology to a country both as a stand-alone entity and as a governing body for a collective of people? It is not difficult to make the transition between personal astrology and other applications of astrology because the principles remain the same; only the words chosen to describe application of those principle changes. First of all, what is mundane astrology because my specific application of political or judicial astrology falls within this broad category?

Mundane astrology is the study of the mundane or down to earth facets of human experience. It has many avenues to explore but can be applied to cities, states, countries, weather, earthquakes and more. Political or judicial astrology would be considered a sub-category of mundane.

Planets and houses seem to be the main criteria for determining the reading for mundane application, with signs descriptive of mannerisms and attitudes. Aspects always are the why of any reading adding the planets' individual natures and qualities as malefic or benefic to the effect. For this article we will focus on the nature of the planets themselves first as a base principal and then as applied to the workings of a country, its citizens, and its government.

The Sun is the heart and core of our particular solar system and the title "solar" reflects identity. It is the giver of light and heat, therefore the giver of life to our system. The Sun is the central gravitational force that holds the entire system together or we would be space dust. Again, astrological principles remain the same only the words change. Because the Sun is self-identity in general it would represent what that country is at its heart and core, the country's national identity, the collective identity of the nation and its inhabitants, and how the country sees itself as that collective.

This would be the general character of the country itself. It is the pro-active (giver of life) principle of the country. As the central gravitational force as specific experience the Sun represents the ability (or lack of it) to be cohesive and "hold it all together." As the centralizing figure of a country, the Sun represents the head of any city, county, state or country. The title may vary from prime minister, to dictator, to king, to chancellor, or to president to name a few. Hopefully you can see the transition of words clearly.

My personal principles for the Moon are home, hearth, family, feelings, emotions, memory, reactive, protective, and nurturing. The Moon represents the citizenry itself expressing as a collective through emotion, security, clan and hearth, the "feelings" of the collective called the country, the reactive principle of the citizenry. We are creatures of habit singy or as a collective. We respond reactively out of our prior conditioning and experience stored in our collective memory. In general the Moon governs the nesting, self-protective, womb-like cocooning or need for food, shelter, safety, agriculture, and water sources. It also represents financial stability to the degree that it provides emotional stability collectively. When we are threatened economically, it registers on many levels, not just the dollars and cents of the threat. We become scared and that takes it directly to our emotional, self-protective, fear-based, reactive level.

Mercury represents the youth of a nation, the function of education and transportation, all forms of communication including the media and the press. This could be all forms of writing, speaking, literature, as early schooling. In its Gemini function, Mercury represents the collection of data. In its Virgo function, Mercury represents discernment and discrimination of such data. Politically, Mercury is also the immediate sense of neighborhood and local issues.

Mental collectivity such as speeches, opinion polls, local press and media, citizen drives such as marches, town hall meetings, and grassroots movements are therefore represented by Mercury. At times we are students, at other times we become teachers. First we learn the minutia of our lives, the nuts and bolts, and then we must progress to higher or broader teachings and applications. Mercury rules the base function of the learning process and Jupiter expands and broadens the process. The student will eventually become the worker and the teacher.

The image of Venus as voluptuous, sensual, luxurious, beautiful, and somewhat greedy stems from her affinity with the signs of Taurus and Libra. In general Venus in her Taurus expression likes shelter, food, water, creature comforts, luxury if she can get it, stability and comfort in her surroundings. Money and value are good with Taurus. Venus in her Libra expression likes people, relationships, associations, cooperation, and partnerships. Rewording those concepts, Venus represents the collective financial and monetary interests and social values of a country, wealth or lack of it, stability of the society and societal relationships. Venus also loves beauty and art in all its forms, therefore artists, entertainers, celebrities, fashion, society, enjoyment of recreational activities, and a country's women in general are represented by Venus.

Mars is the warrior in mankind and at times the lack of warrior-like application. Every front has a back. If you turn the assertion and aggression coin over you will find the opposite functions on the backside of that coin. If war-like is the face, then problems with that face are revealed on the backside. Sometimes Mars is merely divisive and challenging rather than aggressive. Mars as a planet represents the collective assertion and aggressive drives of a country and its divisiveness.

That would include all categories of policing including violent crime and weapons, militancy, including armed forces, war or police actions, machinery including industrial concerns (think of the industrial revolution beginning in the 19th century. Since not all countries are assertive and aggressive, Mars would still be the planet you would consider for countries that choose neutrality or a peaceful means to an end, or to assume a defense posture rather than an aggressive posture, the backside of its particular coin.

In order to physically get to Jupiter, man must take a giant step from Mars over the asteroid belt, which is thought to be the remnants of an exploded planet or possibly leftovers from the formation of the solar system. This is the "leap of faith" mankind must make as it turns its back on its "knowns" of the more personal inner space to reach into the unknowns of outer space, which appears to be colossal and primarily void. Expansion and stretching are Jupiter principles.

I mentioned in the Mercury notes that we move from the nuts and bolts of experience to larger and broader concepts of learning. Jupiter has to do with higher learning, philosophy that includes faith, religion, clergy, churches and the search for God, the law in general including attorneys and the courts, promotion and publicity, and expanded cultural relations. Jupiter makes us stretch, to expand, to reach for more, to have more, and to give more. It is not difficult to make the word transition to Jupiter in its mundane application. Also, the concept of philanthropy and the "cream of society" or the "upper classes" falls under its influence.

Saturn was the outer limits of the early astrologers therefore it represents the limits of society, how far we can go, and where authority or circumstance will not allow us to penetrate. Saturn rules form, contraction and boundaries, real or imagined. It can be the big rock in the middle of anyone's road. Saturn is organized, traditional, conservative, structured and therefore "rules" those issues in human experience.

Politically Saturn rules governments, institutions, bureaucracy, infrastructure, responsibility, systems, controls, governing bodies, and the body of law as control or form. Saturn is orderly, responsible and strict, the "letter" of the law as opposed to the "spirit" of the law. Saturn would represent the tripartite structure of our government, the judicial, the congressional, and the executive branches, each with its rigid format and governing issues. It would govern the responsibility and tradition of a country and its people.

The three outer planets were not part of the mundane or judicial astrology of the ancients. Uranus was discovered in 1781, Neptune in 1846 and Pluto in 1930. The roles each recently discovered body play are a work in progress with many astrologers following the old seven-planet rulership system and with just as many other astrologers using the newly discovered bodies as well. To use or not to use is a judgment call for any astrologer so you will encounter differing sets of mundane rules as well. If you understand the nature of the three recently discovered bodies, it will not be difficult to make good associations for their activity or rulership for a country.

Uranus was discovered during the American and the French Revolutions, not surprising since Uranus is the rebel in charge of the counter-culture and tends to be quite radical. It represents the element of breakthrough, lightning, earthquakes, explosions and surprises in human experience. It doesn't like conformity, structure, systems that bind or restrict, tradition, or any rule-bound system. It makes up its own rules as it goes and does not always have a better solution while it is busy exploding the status quo.

Uranus does rule large groups of people (humanity as a collective) such as associations or collective governing bodies such as a congress in general. Has anyone noticed that our current USA Congress is anything but cohesive and collective in nature as the maverick energy of Uranus shows up in all sorts of unusual forms and actions? Uranus was a conscious part of the development of the telephone and the connection between cultures. Uranus was prominent at the discovery of air travel and further expanded the connection between cultures. Look back at all the invention and innovation that developed over the 20th Century. What has the innovation of the computer done for us and for developing of our media? Look to Uranus for any innovation, invention, or breakthrough technology that effects us as a collective.

Neptune was discovered in 1846 just prior to the Civil War, a teeming period of hostility and confusion. Along with the discovery of the planet, photography and all that means to our current world came into being. There are actual photographs of President Lincoln who was assassinated in 1865. There was a flowering of psychic phenomena and religion at that time as well. Neptune was named for the mythological god of the sea and is naturally associated with all things oceanic and liquid, such as naval groups, petroleum and other chemicals, drugs, brewing and alcohol, the burgeoning art culture, glamour, theater, fantasy, and fiction to name a few. When positive Neptune is inspirational, tending toward spirituality as opposed to codified religion, imagination, humane activities such as charitable institutions and rescue work. When negative Neptune leads to confusion, illusion, delusion, scandal, lies, fraud, hidden or covert actions, misapplication or misdirection of words and deeds (if it is not the truth it is a lie). Sound anything like government at the moment?

Pluto was discovered in 1930 near the depth of the Great Depression in 1932, a desperate time for America and the world in general. This was the time of rampant crime, criminals and the criminal underworld, the development of nuclear power, and the rise of dictators and countries hell-bent on world dominance. Much was driven underground where it has built and festered like a hidden wound on the fabric of our society. As Pluto moves to oppose its original discovery point, so much of that which has been hidden has been exposed and is now surfacing as problems for today's society to solve.

As the modern 8th house ruler, Pluto rules financial and political power, big business, insurance, credit, power brokering, the criminal underworld, long-term health and financial issues, catastrophic experiences, ecology, and the environment. Does any of this sound familiar from today's headlines? Is nuclear power access a talking point in our world? Are there any dictators exercising their will? Are criminals making headlines such as the Somali Pirates, the Mexican drug lords, the out of control USA gangs, the Israeli spy and assassination network in Dubai, or the Yemen, Afghan and Pakistan terrorist training camps? Additionally we are touting an oxymoron: "clean coal", the product of an underground mine, along with developing gas and oil reserves and nuclear power plants to say nothing of Iran and North Korea's nuclear threat.

I hope I have illustrated how easy it can be to translate a basic astrological principle to a specific mundane or political application. The same is true of any other astrological principle to a different application. The change is not to the basic principle itself. It is a change to the choice of descriptive words only. We live in a complex world, but there are underlying themes that provide structure and coherence. If I were to do an overview of Grand Central Station in New York City, it would look random and chaotic. But there is rhyme and rhythm, a purpose and a pattern beneath what appears to be chaos that can reveal itself through observation. I invite you to look into the world of mundane astrology.

Astrological Choices - What Kind of Astrologer Will You Choose Or Choose to Be?

In any human issue category there is a huge number of service providers to choose from and astrology is no exception. Just put any category title into a search engine and you can get thousands or even millions of possibilities. On a moment of curiosity I just Googled my own name and got 4,120,000 entries. I had no idea I was that popular (me and every other name like mine). This staggering amount of information is so far beyond anyone's ability to research just one item meaningfully. Just how do you determine quality within such enormous quantity?

Since our subject is astrology and astrologers, does an astrologer have to be professional, accredited, famous, or just plain available? If you happen to be a budding astrologer you will have to make choices as to what kind of an astrologer you will become. Your choices will involve the services you offer to clients, your skill and credibility. plus personal motivations and goals. I am offering an overview of several considerations to help you make valid astrological choices for yourself and eventually for what you offer your clients. As you understand what underlies your own motivations and choices you should be able to apply the same reasoning to the choice of an astrologer to read you.

Motivation - Where are you coming from in your philosophic outlook? Do you see this as a service project, a way to make money, a profession, love of the study itself or some other basic personal drive? Are you more interested in self-help, fun, business, relationship, evolution, or other astrological technique? How does a study or work of this type fit into your personal belief systems? Personally you will need to resolve any inherent conflicts or face a lifetime of self-questioning. When choosing an astrologer to read for you, you need to be aware that they face the same questions in their own choices.

Personality - Are you clinical or a more personally sensitive person? Some readers are subjectively involved in their reading. Others readers prefer objectivity. Astrology provides a diagram, a personal map of an entity in wheel form that allows examination of their life. You can use the wheel in so many different ways. One of those is the choice between the subjective or objective approach. Do you prefer the personal approach or the arms-length approach? Do you want for yourself or do you want to provide others with a once a year reading done in a one-hour increment perhaps in writing or on a pre-recorded tape or even computer generated? Do you want for yourself or do you want to provide others personal access with the ability to call back with questions? Each of us is human and will choose the role most comfortable, the one that fits into our personal norms and provides us with good results. Look at your self first. How do you see yourself reading as an astrologer? Do you want to be the clinician or the sensitive when you read for others? Then take those questions a step further. What kind of astrologer would you choose to read for you? Do you want the clinician or the sensitive to read you?

Setting - Are you more comfortable in a business-like setting such as a formal office, for either seeing or becoming an astrologer? Are you more comfortable in a home-like atmosphere for being read by another or in doing a reading for another? Do you want strangers ((before the reading) inside your personal space because each person who enters our personal space whether they be astrologers or not bring their personal influence into our space. With the many years I have practiced astrology, I have read clients in both in a business and a personal setting and I have encountered myriad settings when someone reads me. We do what is available and what is comfortable to us. Perhaps your choices will involve the possibility of a setting, urban or rural, private or public, or availability of resource. Many students study in quiet because of religious or philosophical differences with their personal families and their extended or cultural families, Each of us have the choice of setting whether we are studying, or being read or we are reading for a client.

Learning Curve - When I started astrology I was self-taught, spending the first few years busting the books. I never realized there were teachers in my area so I did not have specific teachers. Later I started reading for others and eventually teaching others. If you can learn through this self-taught method, it is simply one specific way to learn. If you were fortunate enough to have a teacher or an established class it is just as valid and possibly much easier than my alone journey. One learning method is not better than another, it is just different. You should choose from what is available to you and feels the most comfortable to your own learning preferences. Students become astrologers by practicing their craft not just by reading or listening. Method and technique are just a means to an end. The proof will always be in the readings. This is true of your own information gathering and conclusions as well as the same learning curve in other readers.

Credibility - This should be a big issue astrologically. There are the usual issues of honesty, integrity, and respect for privacy. No one wants to encounter a scam artist, but they are out there in the same numbers as any other human activity. Just because someone presents themselves as spiritually motivated does not make it so. A spiritually motivated person acts spiritually, never dishonestly. Remember, I am describing both you and any outside counselor you choose to read you. You must be discerning...not judgmental, just observant and dispassionate in your choices. Trust your own instincts. If you feel uncomfortable with a reader, move on to find another. When you have a reading of any type, you allow another human being (potentially unknown game-changer) to walk around in your mind. You need to be comfortable in such choices. Having said all that about an outside reader, you need to face and develop those same credibility issues within yourself as you develop your skills and offer your services. It is important that you have honesty, integrity and respect for privacy. An individual's birth map in skilled hands has no secrets. Astrologers must be respectful of such trust. You have the right to expect that same respect when you put your birth map in the hands of another.

More on Credibility - Unfortunately as mentioned wherever there are humans there will be issues of misuse of information or skills. There are fakes and charletans in every category of humanity. Some people seem to be inherently dishonest and the field of reading is no exception. Again...you must be discerning. If you get burned, consider it an unfortunate life lesson and move on but do not repeat your poor choice or recommend others to that poor choice. Word of mouth advertising is both the best and the worst advertising possible. If you are damaged in any way (financial damage is the least of your concerns), go for remedy or healing as soon as possible. Don't let a problem fester from something minor into something major over time.

If you encounter one who is continually trying to pedal outside services such as lighting candles to prevent negative happenings, preying on your guilt or grief in personal tragedy, or other similar nonsense, it has nothing to do with astrology. An honest astrologer will not go down that negative path. I have run into people who have needed help with such unnecessary negativity in their lives and have helped them as part of my service as a human being. This help was not astrological in nature. To me it was necessary and healing in nature. Choose carefully those you allow into your mind and life. Choose carefully what kind of an astrologer you will become because you have the potential to profoundly influence another person's life and choices. ABC - Always Be Credible.

Information Flow - Astrologers should be able to tell you about yourself and your life without the information pump being primed. I do not believe a reading would be valid and honest if I were to ask you a bunch of questions first or allow you to load me down with information. If I am any good at what I do, I really should not need to do that. I might choose to question an either/or conundrum in the middle of a reading, such as "It could be this or that, how do you see this working in your life?" If you feed me information and I feed it back to you as a reading, it is simply not honest. I ask clients not to volunteer information about themselves and their lives and to allow me to generate the information from the wheel itself. That way I know I am getting the information from the patterns and not prior knowledge of the person. I can't stop people from talking and telling me personal information I would rather not know, but I do try, My solution? I ask my clients if they want to hear their voice or my voice on the tape recording of our session. That is a good illustration of my desire for the cleanest possible reading. Oh...the answer is yes, I do tape my readings. I speak very fast for probably an hour or more and that is difficult to take in with one run-through. As the reading progresses, more and more of the individual is revealed through the reading process and that is natural. Just don't initially prime the information pump whether you are being read or if you are giving a reading.

Credentials - What about credentials? It is possible to go through standardized astrological testing to establish credentials as to your skill. There are several organizations who can administer such tests should you choose and these tests are quite difficult. I know very good astrologers who never bothered to be tested and some equally as good astrologers who did go through the testing procedure. The choice to do or not to do is always individual. A problem would occur if one group decided their way was the only way. But then again astrologers are still considered to be of the human species so there is nothing unusual about the ego running away with the mouth, is there? If you choose an astrologer to read for you, know that passing such testing simply specifies that an astrologer has a grasp and comprehension of the basics of astrology which truly is a great basis for an astrologer. As I said before, proof of skill will always be in the readings themselves.

Psychic or Astrology - Are you psychic as well as an astrologer and want to blend those skills? Astrological skill is very different from psychic sensitivity. I practice and teach both so I do understand the distinction. Psychic stems from an emotional, instinctive or feeling basis and astrology stems from an intellectual, intuitive or reasoning basis. From my perspective, if you are psychic you can apply that skill to any level of your life and it should be a benefit to you and others (if you are reasonably accurate). Psychic has nothing to do with astrology per se, but can be as useful in that context as well. My personal astrologer was both psychic and a good astrologer and successfully blended those skills. Personally I keep those skills separate at least most of the time. My choice. Do you want a purist to read for you as a psychic or an astrologer or are you comfortable with a merged skill set?

These are a few of the issues that you will encounter as you choose an astrologer for yourself or choose to act as an astrologer for others.

Astrology, Zodiacs, and Jyotish - Exclusive Usage of Vedic Sidereal is a Trap to Avoid

Avoid the astrology trap of using the Sidereal zodiac exclusively (or practitioners who do) or risk vast inaccuracies.

You've always thought that you had a Sagittarius Sun sign, but then you're confused when a friend shows you a "cooler" form of astrology, one which totally changes what you thought you knew about your basic natal chart. You think, "How can I have a Scorpio Sun?" You don't.

Sidereal zodiac (the zodiac of constellations) advocates will tell you, "...but Sidereal is the 'oldest astrology,' it's the basis for Hindu astrology!"

While it is the basis for Hindu astrology, functional Chaldean and Greek predate horoscopic Hindu/Vedic/Jyotish/Indian, and evidence shows that Hindu horoscopic astrology borrowed heavily from these cultures.

You're not alone if you've fallen for a smooth-talking Internet marketer telling you that she'll help you fix all your problems if you buy her products and services based on the Sidereal zodiac. Her getting testimonials from big, recognizable names (who happen to use the same publishers in many cases) means that she has a good P.R. machine, that's all.

How to Escape This Trap

We recommend using the Tropical zodiac (and practitioners who do) instead as the primary zodiac. This is the zodiac of Western astrology and it's what you'll find at most non-Eastern astrology sites.

While we're sure there exist talented astrologers in India who rely upon the Sidereal zodiac and have shaped their systems to be efficient in the real world, we have yet to encounter an American, European or other Western astrologer who uses the Sidereal zodiac exclusively and offers even consistently semi-acceptable accuracy rates.

If the practitioner who uses Sidereal is very psychic and, or has developed their own unique, reliable system using it, then perhaps they might be able to obtain consistently high accuracy. But our experience since the 1980s tells us that they don't exist in America or anywhere else in the Western world.

Your "Real" Signs

It must be said that you won't find your "real Ascendant/Rising sign" (or "real Sun sign," or "real Moon sign," etc.) by using the Sidereal zodiac.

Make no mistake: you won't find out "...what sign you really are..." using the Sidereal zodiac (basis for Hindu/Vedic/Jyotish/Indian astrology), and it isn't the "...true zodiac." Don't fall for this nonsense.

Sidereal Zodiac Origins

Usage of the Sidereal zodiac is from an era when practitioners had an inadequate understanding of the realities of our planet and solar system. It was already developed (in a very rough form) before the origins of horoscopic astrology.

The origins of the actual precise astrological horoscope (horoscopic astrology), which includes the Ascendant or Rising sign, etc. is traced back to Hellenistic Egypt (about 330 BC - 30 BC). Prior to this time (when the Hindus adopted horoscope astrology), our findings show that Hindu astrology was essentially an ambiguous spiritual philosophy, without distinct means for explicit delineation and prediction.

The Hindus borrowing the functional horoscope, which includes the Ascendant/Rising sign, from other cultures is certainly acceptable, but using the Sidereal zodiac in conjunction with it results in some technical concerns, as outlined below.

The Sidereal Zodiac system is based on fixed stars, hence the problem. We attach importance to the fixed stars, but we don't like how the Sidereal system links the degrees of the Ecliptic to them.

The True Ascendant

The true Ascendant (Rising sign), in our opinion, is where the Eastern horizon intercepts the Ecliptic. This is so in the Tropical zodiac system, but not the Sidereal. Using that system, due to the current 20+ degree difference between the zodiacs, you'll likely have a different Ascendant, Sun sign, and Moon sign, among other differences.

Precession

Due to precession, there exists the current 20+ degree discrepancy between the Tropical and Sidereal zodiacs, but it's only a concern with transits and other superficial timing indicators. The natal calculations are absolutely valid under Tropical, in our opinion. Anyway, you can always adjust Tropical zodiac transit charts, lunar return charts, solar return charts and other methods that are altered due to precession.

Complicated Forms of Astrology

Furthermore, while the techniques of Hindu, or Vedic astrology are said by some proponents to be "more complicated" than those of modern Western astrology, they aren't more complicated in the least than the collective methods of ancient astrology, including those of Chaldean, Greek, Egyptian, Arabic, and others.

Real Astrology Symbolizes Personal Fate

The more deeply a practitioner objectively explores the science of astrology, instead of trying to find ways to manipulate life to one's desire (e.g., "getting astrologically unstuck and finding and keeping the love of your life"), what is really discovered is that the comprehensive charts symbolize immutable fate--predestination. Although you can't turn your charts into a magic genie who will grant all of your wishes, self- understanding, thus acceptance is obtainable.

We accept Sidereal zodiac astrology as an alternative, yet we believe the Tropical zodiac is optimum for precision. We recommend you seek out astrologers who are well-versed in the Topical zodiac, which is the basis for Western astrology. Also, due to proven, more reliable methods, you're better off hiring astrologers who favor ancient rather than modern astrology, as we've detailed in many articles.

How Astrologers Think

Times have changed! How do astrologers think today? Not much differently than they've always thought. But they could be better understood. Learn more ....

Russians think of their country as Aquarius ruled, according to Johnson's "Russia List". Johnson's List is a daily e-mail newsletter with information and analysis about contemporary Russia from a wide range of sources. Maybe this is why they are so open to astrology. Aquarius is also the ruling sign for astrologers.

I was reading about some predictions Russian astrologers were making for the year 2002 in an article written at that time by Kevin O'Flynn for Johnson's "Russia List" entitled "Stars Aren't Smiling Down on 2002".

O'Flynn, who quotes Russian astrologers like Yury Longo, Sergei Bezborodny and Alexander Zarayev, doesn't seem to put much store in astrological predictions himself but he notes that "even several current and former Russian and U.S. leaders and their wives have shown an interest in astrological predictions". I don't know what Russian leaders he's referring to but it is thought that President and Mrs. Reagan consulted astrologers like Sydney Omar, Jeanne Dixon and Joan Quigley.

The comment that caught my attention in the article, however, was this:

"Perhaps the most pessimistic of the astrologers doing the rounds in the Russian media was Alexander Zarayev. He predicted in "Argumenty i Fakty" that Russia would see a bumpy ride between February 28 and March 12 and an even worse time after July 27, with problems in the Middle East and other hot spots. It will be similar to the [ruble] default in 1998," said Zarayev, who, like many astrologers, was short on details [emphasis mine].

Many writers who cover astrology interviews and predictions don't understand or like astrology and cover it with thinly veiled ridicule.

There is a reason astrologers are "short on details" and that is what I would like to explain in this article. It has to do with the way our predictions are made and the way we think.

Astrologers don't associate events by cause and effect. They associate them by analogy, much as poets do.

There are two reasons they use analogy. First, we are trying to explain things that are difficult to put into words, like poets. The poet says,"my love is like a red, red rose" because it is hard to put into words what an intangible thing, feeling or experience like love is without comparing it to something tangible, of rare beauty and ecstatic fragrance, like, for example, a rose.

Secondly, we are arriving at our conclusions by connecting dots that are invisible to the untrained eye but which exist in our formulas and calculations and lead us to our conclusions without physical evidence. This is why backing up some of our statements is difficult. We know two things are associated through time and space but we ourselves are not exactly certain what they will look like on the manifest earth plane. That is why the Russian astrologer said, "It will be similar to the [ruble] default in 1998."

If I might qualify Zarayev's statement, which he himself was not allowed to do in this once-removed report of his prediction, I would suggest that the events he describes are "similar" in gravity and scope, but also perhaps in "tone" and "texture" to the ruble default.

Here's an example from something you may be more familiar with. I could say that 911 was similar to the Great Fire of London in 1666 and to the Galveston Flood in 1900 (the deadliest natural disaster that the United States has ever experienced) or the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 in scope because these are all catastrophic events of almost unimaginable proportions. But 911 is more similar in tone to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the Viking raid on the Lindisfarne Monastery in Great Britain in 793 because although these events were catastrophic disasters they were also surprise attacks by foreign enemies on home soil.

Here's an example of how this kind of reasoning is carried out in event forecasting. Suppose I see that Saturn is going to pass over your Moon in your fourth house. Astrology is a language. It is a way of describing energy. Now we try to come up with some events that are probable, given what we know about this energy. In some cases, we take the nature of the person we're reading for into account -- he could be an 80 year old man or she could be a 26 year old girl -- and also what we know of their character and life events from information we request ahead of time.

Here are some of the images that are suggested by this combination of energy, Saturn + Moon + 4th house:

-- someone goes on an archaeology dig

-- someone's parent becomes very ill

-- someone breaks their leg and is laid up in the house for awhile, on the ground floor for convenience

-- someone gets some long lost information about their ancestors for their genealogy project

-- someone gets locked down in the basement by mistake or on purpose

-- someone becomes a grandparent for the first time

-- someone contacts the cemetery to find out about burial plots

-- someone is digging in their backyard (in Chicago!) and finds a dinosaur bone

-- a very old tree falls on someone's house

As a matter of fact, if you can "connect the dots" and have a feel for what it is these items could have in common, you are in line to be a good astrologer.

I'll help you.

Saturn = something or someone very old, buried, long forgotten

Moon = long ago and far away, infantile, motherish

4th house = ancestors, deeply hidden, emotionally meaningful

We use intuitive thinking to interpret information revealed by the numbers in our astrological calculations. You might also compare this to the way a doctor reads an x-ray. The x-ray shows a picture of something but it really doesn't mean anything until someone who is trained to interpret x-ray pictures looks at it and tells you.

When I try to help my astrology students develop their intuition, we do "drills" like this. I ask, "If you were a flower, what kind would you be?" Then I ask, "If that person over there were a flower, what kind would s/he be?" Or a color. Or a piece of music. Or a body of water. My students get irritated with this sometimes, but it's like practicing scales (etudes) on the piano It is building right brain or intuitive skills.

As we've shown, when astrologer Zarayev says "similar to the ruble default in 1998", he is making an analogy - "this" -- something known -- is like "that" -- something as yet unknown -- based on three dimensional dot-to-dot, using geometric proportions and a nonlinear thinking similar to physics and even music, which can seem vague.

Many people believe that astrology is like being psychic or prophetic. As a matter of fact, astrology is more like physics or music and not at all like intuitive and psychic ability, although astrologers can use both these skills to enhance the information they give you from their calculations. However, astrologers study intensely from three to five years to learn their skills and most would be insulted if you described them as a psychic or intuitive! Many astrologers are among the brightest people on earth. (Not necessasrily so with psychics or intuitives.)

Astrology is a branch of meta-physics. Physics explores the creation of the universe using the left brain. Meta-physics explores the creation of the universe using the right brain.

Physicists use numbers and formulae in a quantitative language. Astrologers use astrological symbols and formulae in a qualitative language. Musicians use notes and formulae in what is commonly considered the most universal of all languages.

While clients may think that astrologers do nothing but predictions about people's lives, waiting patiently by their phone for the go-ahead on a chart (!), most astrologers are fascinated with the inner workings of the universe, like physicists, and spend hours doing independent research, honing their skills on projects of their own that interest them. Ask your favorite astrologer what s/he's researching at the moment and be ready for a surprise!.

What am I studying right now? The effect of Pluto transits through Sagittarius on the Arab world, the history of the Middle Ages, music theory, and advanced horary astrology.

Reading for clients often permits us to have the time for these other pursuits -- we do love our clients! -- which are usually not lucrative in and of themselves. Astrologers compare notes among themselves regarding their discoveries and present findings in professional journals, at meetings and casually among friends with shared interests -- just like other professionals.

Let's explore further the way astrologers think. As we discussed, astrology is a branch of metaphysics. Metaphysicians explore the creation of the universe using the right brain and something called "vertical" thinking. Here's the difference between horizontal and vertical thinking.

Horizontal thinking uses the concept of cause and effect and relies on a linear relationship between events in time and space, i.e., first this happened and then this happened as a result. The ineffective conclusion of World War I caused World War II.

Here's a day-to-day example. I'm drinking this diet coke because I am thirsty. (I got thirsty and that caused me to drink the diet coke.) Or I'm drinking this diet coke because my grandmother introduced me to them on hot afternoons in Texas when I was a kid. Therefore, I always drink cokes when it's hot. You see, hot weather causes me to drink diet coke.

Vertical thinking is different. It associates events by a meaningful relationship which is sometimes subjective (the meaning is in the reality of the beholder) and sometimes by a system which describes invisible but not imaginary patterns and relationships such as music or astrology.

For example, it might also be that the reason I'm drinking this diet coke today is because something triggers me subconsciously to reach for one every time I run my tongue over the roof of my mouth in a certain way I've been doing since childhood. This subconscious conditioning is personal and subjective but rubbing my tongue over the roof of my mouth does not "cause" me to drink diet cokes.

Or I may do this because it's 3:20 pm and that's when I used to wake up from my polio-prevention nap as a kid and be handed a cold diet coke by my grandmother on the way to the swimming pool.

Something "reminds me" around 3:20 every afternoon that it's time to "reach for a diet coke". That's personal and subjective and an association that the subconscious mind is making but childhood naps did not "cause" me to drink this diet coke.

Naturally when looking for vertical connections, we roam backwards and forwards in time. Actually in astrology, the childhood diet cokes and the adult diet cokes would be siblings. The parent is something else entirely and that something is the mother lode.

There is a third element in vertical thinking and that is an invisible but discernible quality to a particular time that attracts events to it by appropriateness.

Before I go too much further with this, here's a day-to-day example of the "quality" of a time. Every morning upon first awakening, I go for a five mile walk. It's usually a fun and peaceful way to start the day. Two days ago, a dog harassed me for several minutes when I checked my mailbox on the way home. A car almost ran me over. Then the bottom fell out of a bag of garbage I took to the trash.

At that point, I replanned my day, figuring it was going to be the kind of energy where I should do as little as possible outside the house. The "quality" of the time was not good. I didn't need to check my ephemeris to know this (!) but perhaps there were some negative aspects to the Moon for several hours that day.

Had I looked ahead, I might have known this but I don't rely much on astrology for day to day matters, though that may surprise you. This is because I feel that we must develop ourselves to the point that we can roll with the motion of the inner planets in order to be effective adults. Inner planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars dictate day-to-day matters and changes that occur over a period of say, a few weeks.) Simple maturity dictates that we become capable in handling our daily affairs. We have had every inner planet circle our charts many times if we are over thirty and should be used to their energy by now.

In times of crisis and transformation, or confusion and discouragement, I study my own chart intensely and often seek help from other astrologers and healers as well. These times are ruled by the outer planets Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Some of these planets will only visit a few houses of our charts during our entire lives and we are unfamiliar with them to a degree that can wreak havoc with our well planned lives. All of us have parts of ourselves we do not know.

Important to note, however, returning to my morning that got off to a bad start ... the dog did not cause the "cause" the car to almost hit me. The careless driver didn't "cause" the garbage bag to break. They were all things of a certain nature that clustered together at one time and place. They were siblings, the parent of which might be of interest to an astrologer.

The Greeks had two words for time: chronos and kairos. Chronos refers to chronological time, the kind used for cause and effect reasoning. Kairos refers to a quality of time being such that all events that occur at that time are similar in some way.

When I give my classes, which are usually small because they are geared toward gifted infp healers who represent only 1% of the population, I like to ask us to consider the quality of the time that would draw exactly these 5 or 10 people together out of the billions of people on the earth.

This is happening randomly throughout your day as well. Why did you wind up at the grocery store in line with those particular people? Why did your name come up for an IRS audit at this time? Why did you cross the intersection just in time to get hit by that car?

These are rhetorical questions but they are actually quite fascinating to an astrologer who will study such things intently. For example, it might surprise you to know that when we look at the charts of a policeman and a criminal, they are quite similar -- certainly more alike than the charts of policeman and a pianist. The same applies to victims and perpetrators of accidents, rapes, surgeries, etc. Slowly a pattern reveals itself.

It is the kairos time in your astrology chart that is analyzed for information about your character which will determine your fate or what amounts to fate. "Character is fate." An excellent book on this topic is "The Challenge of Fate" by Thorwald Dethlefsen, an extremely influential German metaphysician whose books are not always available in English translation.

Another phrase we use is this. "Your life is your birth writ large." The moment of your birth contains the energy which you will smear, so to speak, or spread across 60 to 90 years of time on the planet. Its flavor will trickle down over and through everything you do, creating ribbons of texture and pattern, making everything you do similar or familiar in some secret, subtle way. If only you had eyes to see. It is easier to discern this in someone besides yourself.

It is even possible to see that the manner of your physical birth is repeated time and time again across the length of your life in the particular outer events that occur or cluster around your energy. It takes training to see this. Also, most people are not familiar with the details of their birth.

If you plan to study metaphysics or astrology, a good thing to do is ask your mother all about the details of your birth so you have the information handy. It will become more and more meaningful to you as your studies progress.

Getting back to kairos, sometimes kairos reveals itself best by going backwards across linear time. Most of my personal projects as an astrologer involve looking back at transits throughout history to see what happened under similar transits in the past and what connections I can make.

For example, we had a rare, once in a lifetime astronomical event a few springtimes ago, a Venus eclipse. I looked at all the times in the past when this event occurred , all the way back to 1 CE and discovered two interesting things:

-- a predominance of powerful women rulers or activists;

-- emphasis on the Salic Laws

The laws of the Salian Franks, from whence eventually sprang Charlemagne, forbid women to inherit property and this became a major issue in Europe during later time periods.

Something that interests astrologers, these eclipses have been occurring in the first 15 degrees of Gemini and Sagittarius for 2,000 years.

Another of my pet projects is exploring Pluto transits in Sagittarius. Somewhat unnervingly, I discovered they are low periods for western Europeans and high periods for the Arab world. We just concluded one. When some newscasters and historians alluded to the fact that we were finishing up on the Crusades, an astrologer could see the very alarming reality of this statement mathematically and without emotion or personal human opiniom.

Was I able to predict that 911 would happen? No. But I did predict -- in a paper I read at the "Better Worlde Galleria" in 1995 -- that this time period would bring an increase in terrorism, religious intolerance, difficulties in travel, immigration problems, upsurge of asthma and noise pollution and many other things that have happened. Is this vague? Yes. Is it true? Yes. Is it helpful? Yes.

One astrologer, the inimitable Rob Hand, did seem to predict 911 itself. Incredibly, an editor for "Mountain Astrologer", our "trade journal", chose as an illustration for his article, which appeared well in advance of September 11, 2001, the symbol for the planet Pluto (which among other things symbolizes, death and mass destruction) across the Twin Towers. In my opinion, Michael Lutin, "Vanity Fair" astrologer, also made the prediction.

As a metaphysician, I am not so interested in predictions as I am, like Einstein, interested in knowing God's mind. If this sounds a little presumptuous, at least it keeps me busy. Like the German philosophers, I do believe that something very akin to God's mind or Adam Smith's "invisible hand" is revealed in a detached exploration and understanding of the outworking of history and in the turning gyre of the heavens.

Ancient Astrology, What is it and How Can it Help You?

Ancient astrology is the type of astrology that was practiced by astrologers hundreds and thousands of years ago in medieval Europe, ancient Arabic, Greek, and Indian cultures. There has been a resurgence of ancient forms of astrology in the early 21st century, researching and investigating the ancient techniques and adding them to the set of modern astrological tools.

Modern western astrology has become more focused on psychological analysis of the individual's chart and less and less on the actual predictive elements of astrology such as marriages, accidents, health issues, family and other life areas. Western astrologers became more and more interested in understanding the roots of their art, which were obscured by the ravages of history like the Dark Ages of Europe.

There has been a concerted effort at bringing back to modern use techniques that were used in the ancient world such as rulerships, planetary periods, solar and lunar returns, and such things as oriental and occidental placements of planets in a chart. There has also been a resurgence of Vedic astrology in the western world. Vedic astrology (also called Jyotish, "science of light").

The chief virtues of ancient astrology are that they retain the original mindset and intent of their creators who had a decidedly less materialistic, fear-based, and egoistic emotional disposition, than their modern counterparts. Supposedly this gives greater spiritual and predictive power if the techniques are emulated as closely as possible. In practice this has proven to be true, giving an added practical dimension to astrology that the west has been lacking in for many years.

This is not to say that western astrologers aren't good at predicting the events in the life of any given client, it is the use of the ancient astrology techniques however that have greatly enhanced their ability to do it. Yet the ancient techniques of astrology are still only known by a relatively small amount of western astrologers, the word is spreading though.

Since it is arguable that the Vedic culture of India was one of the first, if not the first advanced society in history, some people assert that Vedic astrology (from ancient India) was the progenitor of all other forms of astrology. Some researchers of the Vedic culture cite references going back as far as 8,000 BC and longer. Some say however that the ancient Greek and Vedic cultures arose around the same time in the early first millennium AD, and that they borrowed concepts from each other. It is difficult to actually know since only fragments remain of the ancient texts, Indian records however have seemed to have suffered far less of the ravages of the Dark Ages but not entirely.

If you are looking for a richer astrology experience you should try out an astrology who advertizes the use of traditional, medieval, or Vedic styles. There is generally a greater emphasis on predictions (money, job, spouse, love, health, etc) than the psychological issues (thoughts, feelings, motivations, etc) of the western brand of astrology. Your experiences with ancient astrology may be much more satisfying.
